District Ventures Capital is recruiting a Director of Finance for Balzac's Coffee Ltd, one of our exciting portfolio companies.

Balzac’s is a premium coffee roaster with cafés in the GTA and a rapidly growing wholesale and ecommerce business. Recently voted Toronto’s ‘Greenest’ coffee shop, Balzac’s is known for its socially responsible business with a purpose reputation - artisan coffee at its finest. The Director of Finance role will help rapidly grow Balzac’s while maintaining the principles established over 25 years ago. 


The successful candidate will be accountable for the accounting, reporting, treasury, and finance operations of the company. The role will require the candidate to continuously monitor and ensure the accuracy, effectiveness, and efficiencies of existing information systems, driving automation, optimization and integration where required. Amongst other things, the Director of Finance will be accountable for the company’s annual budget process, cash management, risk management, and standard operating procedures, and be accountable to the company’s President/CEO and the Board of Directors.

In addition to the above, the successful candidate will play a key role in helping management and the Board to make decisions based on sound financial and operational analysis.   


Principal Accountabilities:


  1. Oversee and be accountable for the full-cycle accounting team and their functions (i.e. A/P, A/R, cash management, payroll).

  2. Prepare timely and accurate month-end reporting and variance analysis on all divisions including cafés, wholesale, and eCommerce.

  3. Design formal staff job descriptions, develop, document, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), accounting policies (ASPE) and internal controls.

  4. Design and implement SOP’s to control and account for inventory across the company’s network of café locations and for the wholesale programs.

  5. Analyze financial information and work with other managers to provide support and recommendations leading to increased profitability and efficiency.

  6. Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal government reporting and regulations.

  7. Lead and assist with timely annual Review and/or Audit engagements and income tax filings.

  8. Manage the capital structure to facilitate growth including working with the company’s banking partners and shareholders.

  9. Work with management and the shareholders on the development of a rolling 3-year strategic and financial plan.

  10. Oversee the management of certain outsourced functions.

  11. Such other roles and duties as may be assigned from time-to-time.


Desired Qualifications: The Director of Finance candidate must have an accounting designation and 10+ years of relevant business experience.  Preference will be given to candidates familiar with NetSuite ERP and Payworks Payroll platforms. 

Working Conditions: Primarily in an office environment. Will be expected to travel as needed to company locations.  Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.
