Description of the role:
We are looking to bring on a Brand Strategist based out of our Toronto office and reporting to the Senior Marketing Manager. The ideal candidate is a high-achiever, thinks creatively and innovatively, has an intimate understanding of traditional and emerging marketing channels, has budget-management skills and can forecast and identify trends and challenges. Further, the candidate should be familiar with the latest trends, technologies and methodologies in graphic design, web design and production. This is a unique role given the “client” will always be owners and entrepreneurs who are passionate and dedicated to successfully and rapidly growing their early-stage companies. The primary role of the Brand Strategist will be to lead the development and execution of brand development and marketing/communication plans for the Fund’s portfolio companies. The Brand Strategist will be involved in due diligence as it pertains to identifying market and marketing opportunities and challenges and the post-closing design, execution and performance measurement of marketing plans.
Specifically, the candidate will be expected to have the skills to:

Develop the marketing strategy for the portfolio companies in line with their objectives;

Conduct market research in order to consider the competitive landscape;
-
Determine sales and marketing goals and objectives as well as budgets and targets;
-
Create and publish all marketing materials in line with marketing plans;
-
Coordinate marketing campaigns with sales activities;
-
Build marketing programs to support specific marketing objectives across different channels and segments in support of an overall strategic marketing plan;
-
Evaluate the impact of marketing programs in achieving their stated objectives; and
-
Partner with creative teams, other internal stakeholders, and external agencies and vendors.
Requirements:

Experience building complex marketing programs and reporting on the results;

Minimum 5 - 7 years of relevant experience working at a top tier agency;

Exposure to digital and direct response marketing;
-
Competence as a creative writer with an eye for great emails and landing pages;

Strong project management skills;
-
Strong problem-solving ability, including metrics-driven thinking;

Ability to travel as necessary;
-
Experience with Consumer-Packaged Goods;
-
Advanced written and verbal communication skills with the ability to converse with business owners and executives at a high-level;

Ability to work flexible hours to grow within a fast-growing organization;

Experience in the food and beverage industry would be considered an asset.

Position: Analyst
Location: Toronto, ON
​
The Analyst will work alongside the deal team at District Ventures Capital supporting the transaction process and Fund operations. Dual administrative and transaction support responsibilities will involve the Analyst with all aspects of a venture capital firm including investing, portfolio management and administration. The candidate will need to demonstrate advanced organizational and communication skills and have an intellectual curiosity for business and finance
Primary Responsibilities Include:
• Collaborate in the evaluation and assessment of investments including the process of sourcing new investments, conducting due diligence and providing support to existing portfolio companies.
• Conduct initial business plan reviews and prepare initial interview memoranda and recommendations to pursue or decline.
• Conduct research and analysis on markets and financial forecasts. This involves analyzing research reports, interviewing and gathering information from industry experts, building valuation models and financial projections.
• Provide post-closing support to the investment team by monitoring portfolio company results and progress against plans.
• Assist in managing the deal pipeline, quarterly/bi-annual reports, and providing financial analysis.
• Manage calendars and ensure that travel and meeting schedules are organized and help with other administrative functions at the Fund.
• Such other similar duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time-to-time.
The ideal candidate would have some or all of the following:
• At least 1-year relevant experience including investing, investment banking/management and/or consulting;
• Detailed oriented and proficient in Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
• Demonstrated ability to execute detailed financial analysis;
• Strong writing skills;
• Critical thinker, intellectually curious and unafraid to ask questions;
• Driven to work hard within a high-performance environment with ability to work across a number of projects simultaneously, often with a high sense of urgency;
• Strong technical/quantitative skills;
• Strong fit with a team oriented, no ego;
• Experience in the food and beverage industry would be an asset.

District Hiring Chief Financial Officer for Balzac’s Coffee Ltd.
Position: Chief Financial Officer
Location: Ancaster, ON
Balzac’s is a premium coffee roaster with a growing number of cafés in the Greater Toronto Area. Recently voted Toronto’s ‘Greenest’ coffee shop, Balzac’s is known for its socially responsible business with a purpose reputation; artisan coffee at its finest. We are now looking to add a CFO to help us rapidly grow Balzac’s while maintaining the principals established by its founder Diana Olsen 25 years ago.

The CFO position is accountable for the accounting, reporting and finance operations of the company. Duties will also include project management of the integration of a new accounting/ERP system. The role will require the development, implementation and maintenance of accounting and reporting best practices and system conversion control. The CFO will be accountable for the company’s annual budget process, cash management and risk management standard operating procedures and be accountable to the company’s President and Board of Directors.
Primary Responsibilites Include:
1. Oversee the operations of the accounting department and be accountable for
the timely and accurate reporting of financial results and variance analysis.
2. Responsible for the financial structure to accommodate growth including
working with the company’s banking partners and shareholders.
3. Design formal staff job descriptions, standard operating procedures (SOP’s)
and a documented system of accounting policies to achieve the department's goals and objectives.
4. Oversee the management of all outsourced functions (i.e. 3rd Party HR
support).
5. Oversee the accounting operations of café locations, especially their control
systems, transaction-processing operations, and compliance with policies
and procedures.
6. Design and implement SOP’s to control and account for inventory across the company’s network of café locations and for the wholesale programs.
7. Work with the Board of Directors on the development of a rolling 3-year
strategic plan.
8. Comply with local, provincial and federal government reporting requirements
and tax filings.
Desired Qualifications:
The CFO candidate should have an accounting designation and 10+ years of relevant business experience. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with the NetSuite ERP and Payworks Payroll platforms.

Working Conditions:
Primarily in an office environment. Will be expected to travel as needed to company locations. Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.

All accounting staff.
